In this article, we explore the extent to which empathy is important and plays a role in public service education programs. While empathy results thereby still affected by some kind of symmetrical thinking that reduces the originality of the other, following the distinction between trust and reliability, the experience of trust offers the possibility to fully embrace the invisible nature of the others givenness. Through a series of two studies, we examine the impact that each method has on 1) the empathy and trust that listeners feel towards a person sharing a personal story, and 2) a speakers own perception of being heard, finding that voice conversion is an especially suitable method for our purposes. What exactly is the relationship between empathy and trust in testimony? The full answer to that latter question is complicated.
This is only half of the story. The authors contend that if leadership is about empowering others, in your presence and your absence, then trust is the emotional framework that allows that service to be freely exchanged. Uncovering how exclusion, engagement, and empathy do and do not occur in choreographed conversations is a crucial key to understanding the mechanisms of discourses that offer different possibilities of public participation.
