Tof10 Online Interactions How Your Brain Perceives Competence

Perception: Definition, Importance, Factors, Perceptual Process, Errors

In the age of virtual communication, the source of a message is often inferred rather than perceived, raising the question of how sender attributions affect content processing. We investigated this issue in an evaluative feedback scenario. Here we draw on recent psychological, psychiatric and neuroimaging findings to examine several key hypotheses on how the internet may be changing our cognition. Given the importance of social and emotional competencies, empathy and morality in interpersonal interactions, it is crucial to analyse these variables in relation to online interaction and their influence on human thriving. We show that perceptions of targets warmth and competence influence how perceivers neurally simulate their actions within their own sensorimotor system and the likelihood of the perceiver intending to help or harm the targets.

When both sensory information and past beliefs are impacting perception, our realities become more distinct from each other. Online interactions amplify our differences in perception.
